End of 2025 updates

Welcome to another round of irregular service updates from the admins of F-hub.org. Overall there was a lot of backend work happening in the second half on 2025, so it might have looked like things were relatively quiet. But at least we got the new PeerTube instance fully operational and used that as a test-bed for our Garage S3 object storage backend (more on that below).

Welcome to another round of irregular service updates from the admins of F-hub.org. After the unfortunate outage in June, we started reorganising our internal network setup to be more resilient and also began to prepare for a 10gbe upgrade in the future. For now, we are far from actually needing 10 gbit connectivity, but the additional costs are relatively minor and would allow us to easily host a Peertube instance (more on that below).

Forgejo access and AI scraper block

Due to excessive web-scraping by AI companies to train their code-completion LLMs, we were forced to employ multiple ways to block non-genuine users on the web-interface of Forgejo. The combination of all these seems to work right now, and thus we were able to remove the login requirement again.

Updates from the sysadmin trenches

After quite some time here is an update on what we have been working on lately. There are currently three main additions in the works: a GoToSocial fediverse instance, a Woodpecker CI service and our own fork of the FOSSpay software. There is also some bad news: Due to excessive AI scraping of our Forgejo instance, we had to at least temporarily switch to requiring logins to access the repos. We hope to find a better solution, but so far all our attempts to discurage this were quickly circumvented by these unscrupulous companies that seem to only care about siphoning up the entire open web as fast as they can.

Our servers are now fully solar powered

Since yesterday morning the servers that run f-hub.org and related services are directly fed from a newly installed solar-panel array on the roof of the building. While it is not an island solution, we expect the solar production and battery capacity to be sufficient to cover 100% of the power needs of our small data-center. But don’t worry, should there be a longer bad weather period, it automatically switches back to grid power, which at least during off-peak periods is mostly wind and geothermal energy here on this beautiful island.

Weblate translation tool added

Being able to easily crowd-source translations for your software project is a vital tool in our global world. Weblate is an open-source and widely known tool for this that directly integrates with code-forges like our Forgejo instance. Futhermore we added direct machine-learning assisted translations via our own instance of the LibreTranslate API.

Loomio group forums added

One long requested feature during the transition away from the old Freegamedev.net forums, was some way for hosted groups to better organize their own sub-forums. This was possible to some extend on the old phpBB boards, but on the new Flarum based forum no such function exists. After multiple trials of different forum software, we believe that we finally found a suitable alternative: Loomio groups on F-hub.org.

Soft launch and updates

While F-hub.org will only officially launch after Forgejo enables ActivityPub federation, we have now reached a state where people interested in participating can request an account.

We now have a new portal page for our Forgejo, as the latest update to versio 1.20 broke the previous customizations and having a dedicated portal page that is shown to visitors only has many advantages.

F-hub.org is a volunteer run initiative that was started in 2022 as an extension to the Freegamedev.net FOSS game developer community which has existed as a community space for more than fifteen years. Our aim is to provide an easy to use and inclusive space for FOSS developers to cooperate on projects (games and other software).

Our main services are a (soon to be) federated git forge and a hybrid chat network that combines modern IRC with XMPP and Matrix access. Member organisations also get access to a project management group forum based on Loomio.

F-hub.org hosts a modern IRC network that can also be easily accessed with XMPP and Matrix accounts from federated servers.

If you are just having a look, feel free to use our easy to use KiwiIRC client in your browser. No account required! And if you already have an IRC client installed, connect on irc.f-hub.org with port: 6697 and SSL enabled. We also host a Gamja IRC client.

F-hub.org is a volunteer run organisation that needs your support!

This can be in the form of personally helping to run our services or through financial contributions.

All finanicial contributions currently go towards running costs (glasfiber internet, solar PV power supply, server hardware etc.).

You can contribute through LiberaPay or on our own work-in-progress payment system. The latter also supports one-time donations.

For this, we are working on an advanced fosspay fork, called Contributron. Currently only credit card payments through Stripe are supported, but one can also link their LiberaPay, OpenCollective, Patreon or Github Sponsors accounts to it. The plan is to also add GNU Taler as a payment method (this work is supported through a grant by Nlnet).
